Specialist Mentoring Support

What do we offer?

In partnership with the University of Portsmouth since 2008, our DSA Accredited service offers individually tailored support that enables each student to manage the demands of university study as independently as possible. The 1:1 mentoring support provided empowers students to develop condition specific strategies that enable them to overcome barriers to learning, whilst also signposting students to other support services when needed.

During mentoring support sessions, you and your mentor will work together to:

  • Schedule sessions regularly at a convenient time to ensure the support is effective and the time and date is confirmed by both parties.
  • Discuss your day to day progress in your studies and signpost you to the support that can help best in accordance with university and local services.
  • Recognise and continue to develop your strengths and identify the skills that you would like to improve.
  • Develop condition specific strategies and approaches that enable you to manage your studies successfully and independently.
  • Identify the aims you would like to work towards and develop a plan to enable you to achieve them.
  • Discuss, review and reflect on your progress towards the achievement of your aims throughout the academic year.
  • Agree focus and action points in each session to be reviewed at the next scheduled session to support your progress.

What our students say about our service*

When asked ‘What has been positive and/ or helpful about the mentoring support you have received so far this year?’ these were the answer we received:

“Very supportive and easy to talk to. Speaking to someone about problems I'm having can help me to think of how to do something about them. Very kind as well, and informal, which makes it overall a very relaxed environment to be in and can help to destress.” (Olita-January 2017)

“Locating places, brokering information about available university services.” (Natalie, January 2017)

“The mentors are very friendly and approachable.” (Laura, December 2016)

“Gained confidence in asking for help from them and my lecturers. Revision tips and mind maps have been very helpful.” (Ahmed, December 2016)

“It has helped me with emotional issues and tracking where I am with revision for exams and handing in Coursework. Having a mentor to make sure I understand the tasks for my coursework is a big help too.” (Joe, December 2016)
