Individuals supported by one of our services in Hampshire recently enjoyed a fantastic new community experience, thanks to a wonderful partnership with Tesco Fareham.
The connection came about through Jenna Ford, Autism Hampshire’s administrative secretary, who helped identify and arrange access to Tesco’s Community room for the group.

Her support opened the door to a welcoming and accessible space where people could come together, relax, and enjoy activities as a group.
The first session was a huge success and filled with laughter, creativity and connection. Supported by staff, everyone got involved in a variety of activities including playing board games together, taking turns on a Nintendo Switch brought along by one of the people we support, getting creative with cards and stickers, and even enjoying a dance to some favourite music.

The friendly atmosphere quickly helped everyone feel comfortable in the space. As the session progressed, people became more relaxed,
socialising with one another and enjoying shared activities. Staff were delighted to see individuals encouraging each other to join in and try something new, with friendships beginning to form as the group spent time together.
One particularly special aspect of the session was watching confidence grow. Some participants who were initially quiet soon began contributing more to conversations and group activities, supported by the positive encouragement of both staff and peers.
Staff also found the experience incredibly rewarding.
“The community room has provided a safe, welcoming space where people feel comfortable connecting with others. Having access to this facility has made a meaningful difference in helping our group come together and build supportive relationships.”

The activities that proved most popular included the group interactions around the Nintendo Switch and the creative card and craft making, which sparked plenty of laughter and teamwork.
Thanks to the success of the first session, the group has now secured the Community Room on the 20th of every month, giving everyone something to look forward to. Future sessions will introduce even more creative activities, themed social events, and interactive group games to keep the sessions fun and inclusive for everyone involved.
A huge thank you to Tesco Fareham for providing such a welcoming community space, and to everyone who helped make the first session such a success. It’s a brilliant example of how strong community connections can help people build confidence, friendships and independence.
