Independence at Home - Grants Available

A charity supporting independence at home for people with disability/long term illness

Contact

Independence at Home is a charity that exists to support independence at home for people with disability and long term illness. They do this by providing grants to people on the basis of need, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion or cultural background. Applications for Independence at Home grants come from all over the UK. Most beneficiaries are from low income households.

Independence at Home’s grants help to meet the cost of disability equipment, home adaptations and other essential items that are required because of illness or disability, yet are not available from public funds. This includes mobility and travel equipment; special disability equipment for use in the home; beds and bedding; communications equipment; home adaptations and building work; home repairs; therapeutic toys and play equipment.

The average grant is currently £300 - although individual grants range between £200 and £600 - depending on the type of equipment supplied or building work carried out. They often work in tandem with funding from other agencies to enable higher value equipment to be purchased or more substantial adaptations to be made.

Independence at Home does not home-visit, and cannot therefore accept referrals directly from individuals who need the funding. They rely instead on referrals from health and social care professionals or from charity workers, who have direct knowledge of their service users’ circumstances gained from a professional involvement in their care.

The website provides all of the information needed on eligibility for grants, what items the grants can help to buy and on how to apply. The application form can be downloaded directly from the ‘How to Apply’ page on their website.
